Following a Step Into Sport Day held at Medina High School last year we took a group of eleven of our Young Leaders to assist in running a Primary School Inclusive Event. The leaders consisted of year 10, 11 and 12 students who have shown an interest in leadership within sport and have completed or are working towards completing various levels of Sports Leaders UK certification.
Our leaders worked alongside twelve year 12 leaders from Medina High School and had an opportunity in the morning to get to know the sports they would be leading and also have a go at playing them themselves. In the afternoon all students demonstrated their leadership skills for groups of students from 8 different Primary Schools across the Isle of Wight.
All the leaders were exceptional throughout the day showing great knowledge and understanding of what they were doing, confidence and competence when speaking to others, both leaders and participants, and all seemed to enjoy it. There was a constant buzz within the sports halls throughout the day and since the event we have received some really positive feedback from various schools, some included below:
‘Please can you pass on our thanks to your Sports Leaders? Our kids loved the event this afternoon and there was lots of debate on the way home about which their favourite activity was.’ Newchurch Primary School
‘Just wanted to say thanks for today. I thought it was brilliant. Our kids had a great time, yours were superb. Well done!’ Yarmouth Primary School
‘Thank you so much for a brilliant afternoon today! All of the students from Medina and St George’s were kind and patient with the children, while demonstrating the skills and encouraging them all to participate. We loved the different activities on offer and had a fantastic afternoon, even those children that did not want to come. They were full of stories and excitement on the bus drive home and once we returned back to school they were sharing their enthusiasm with their friends. Thank you for inviting us, we hope to come again soon.’ Wroxall Primary School
‘On Wednesday I had the pleasure of attending an event being run by St George’s staff at Medina College. The 6th form students had an amazing experience and took so much from the event especially working alongside the students from St George’s who were a credit to the school. All the students from St George’s showed not only patience when talking to the primary school students about how to take part in the sports, but were so enthusiastic and mature. One student in particular that impressed me was Owen, he was so engaged with both the students from the 6th form, as well as the primary school students. It was lovely to see both sets of pupils engaging with each other.’ Medina High School
We look forward to what the future holds for these young leaders and are excited for any future events that they will be a part of.
