During January, six students from St George’s went to the National Digital Twin event in Northwood. The students had an early start arriving at school for 8:30. After arriving at Building 41, they met with other students from other secondary schools on the Island. National Digital Twin gave a particular scenario in which they would have to orchestrate an emergency response, which was an unexploded WW2 bomb found in Newport.
Throughout the day, the students worked as a team to co-ordinate emergency services, move people to a safe location, communicate with experts via email as well as in person. They had to respond to regular alerts such as the bomb exploding, power outages and flooding, as well as other issues that could occur such as fake news on social media.
From the information collated, they created a report on the financial costs, amount of time needed for repairs and how improvements
could be made on any re-build to make the Island more resilient and environmentally friendly.
They then presented to a panel of judges from the NHS, Police, Isle of Wight Council and infrastructure experts.
The students worked solidly throughout the two days, even working through lunch breaks and were able to communicate brilliantly. They managed to amend the council’s policy by adding pillows and quilts to the list for residents to take with them during any evacuation. This resulted in a well-deserved award for The Best Humanitarian Response
