Transition to St George’s Studio School

Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, and at St George’s Studio School we are committed to making the transition as smooth, positive and enjoyable as possible.

Our Year 6 transition programme gives students the opportunity to become familiar with their new school environment, meet staff and fellow students, and experience the unique learning opportunities available at St George’s. Through a series of visits and activities, students can build confidence, develop new friendships and gain a sense of belonging before they officially join us.

We work closely with primary schools, families and support services to ensure that every student is well prepared for the move to secondary education. By getting to know each child before they start, we can provide the support and guidance needed to help them settle quickly and thrive.

Our aim is for every student to feel welcomed, valued and excited about becoming part of the St George’s Studio School community.

Curriculum Offer and Intent

At St George’s Studio, we provide a broad, balanced and personalised curriculum that meets the academic, social and emotional needs of our students. Our curriculum is rooted in strong relationships, clear routines and a trauma-informed approach, ensuring that all students are emotionally ready to learn and able to engage positively in education.

The curriculum is delivered through core academic subjects, practical learning, personal development and enrichment. It is clearly detailed through our curriculum offer, timetable, and long-term and medium-term planning, ensuring consistency, progression and coherence across all areas of learning.

Values-Led Curriculum

Our curriculum is explicitly shaped by St George’s core values:

  • Aspiration

Students are supported to develop confidence, set meaningful goals and recognise their own potential. A wide subject offer and enrichment opportunities raise aspirations and support preparation for future education, employment and training.

  • Respect

Respect underpins all learning and relationships. Students are taught to value themselves and others, understand differences and contribute positively to the school community through calm, respectful behaviour.

  • Perseverance

Learning is carefully scaffolded to help students persist when learning feels challenging. Effort, progress and resilience are prioritised, supporting students to overcome barriers and remain engaged.

  • Independence

The curriculum encourages students to take increasing responsibility for their learning, behaviour and choices, developing confidence and life skills needed for adulthood.

EHCP-Led and Personalised Learning

All students have an EHCP with their main presenting need as SEMH.

EHCP outcomes and targets are embedded across all subjects and strands of learning. Planning, teaching and assessment are adapted to ensure students make meaningful progress emotionally, socially and academically.

Six-Strand Curriculum Model

Our curriculum is structured around six core strands, which run through all subjects, routines and interactions:

  1. Boundaries – supporting students to understand expectations, routines and safe behaviours, creating predictability and security.
  2. Resilience – developing perseverance, confidence and the ability to cope with challenge and change.
  3. Focus – building engagement, attention and readiness to learn through structured and purposeful learning experiences.
  4. Respect – promoting positive relationships, empathy and understanding for self and others.
  5. Self-Regulation – supporting students to recognise and manage emotions, behaviours and responses.
  6. Independence – developing responsibility, decision-making and preparation for adulthood.

These strands are embedded across academic learning, practical subjects, personal development and enrichment, ensuring a holistic and trauma-informed curriculum

Curriculum Intent

Our intent is that all students:

  • Feel safe, respected and ready to learn
  • Build positive relationships and emotional regulation skills
  • Make progress towards EHCP outcomes
  • Develop aspiration, resilience, perseverance and independence
  • Are prepared for their next steps in education, employment or training

Through a values-led, personalised and trauma-informed curriculum, we aim to remove barriers to learning and enable every student to thrive.

Class Set-up and School Week

We currently have 5 classes – some of these are mixed year groups, working within the age, rather than stage, model. There are 5 lessons in our school day, and these are 50 minutes long. Traditionally academic subjects are studied in the morning, followed by vocational subjects in the afternoon.

Accreditation

Accreditations currently include LASER qualifications in RSHE and Functional Skills in English and Maths. Students also receive AQA Unit Award qualifications in a variety of skills, subjects, topics and interests. From September 2026 we will also be offering GCSE qualifications in English and Maths.

Studio School Ethos Statement

Trauma-Informed and Relationship-Centered

At St George’s Studio, we are trauma informed and relationship centered and we understand that readiness to learn begins with emotional safety, trust, and strong relationships. We recognise that students bring a wide range of life experiences into school, and we respond with empathy, consistency and high expectations, ensuring every young person feels safe, understood, and valued.

Our ethos is built on Aspiration. We believe that every student has the ability to succeed, regardless of their starting point. Through encouragement, clear routines, and supportive relationships, we help students to build hope, confidence and a belief in their own potential, enabling them to re-engage with learning and plan positively for the future.

Respect underpins all interactions within our school community. We model calm, respectful communication and teach students how to express their needs, feelings, and boundaries in appropriate ways. By prioritising dignity, fairness, and mutual understanding, we create an environment where students feel secure enough to take calculated risks in their learning and relationships.

We promote Perseverance by recognising that behaviour and engagement are forms of communication. We respond to challenges with patience and support, helping students regulate emotions, repair relationships, and develop resilience. We focus on progress over perfection, reinforcing effort, and growth rather than punishment or blame.

Through Independence, we empower students to develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and responsibility. With guided support, students learn to reflect on their choices, manage setbacks, and build the skills needed to become confident, self-directed learners, and active members of the community.

Together, our trauma-informed approach ensures that students are emotionally, socially and academically ready to learn, enabling them to thrive within school and beyond.

Our Studio School Ethos – STUDENT VERSION

At St Geroge’s Studio school, the team supporting you are trauma trained and informed. We believe that learning works best when people feel safe, calm, and supported. Everyone’s experiences are different, and we understand that this can affect how we feel and learn. That’s why we focus on strong relationships, understanding, and fairness, so everyone has the chance to do their best.

Aspiration means believing in yourself and your future. We encourage you to aim high, try new things, and be proud of your progress, no matter where you start. We will support you to set goals and work towards them at your own pace.

Respect means treating yourself and others with kindness and care. We listen to each other, speak calmly, and sort problems out in a fair way. When we feel respected, it’s easier to feel safe and ready to learn.

Perseverance means keeping going, even when things feel hard. We know that mistakes happen and that tough days are part of learning. Staff will help you manage your feelings, learn from challenges, and get back on track.

Independence means learning how to make good choices and take responsibility for yourself. With support, you will learn how to understand your emotions, ask for help when you need it, and become more confident in managing your learning and behaviour.

At St George’s Studio, we work together to create a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and ready to learn, so you can grow, succeed, and plan positively for your future.
